Search Montgomery County Death Records
Montgomery County death records are available at the vital records office inside the Dennis Avenue Health Center in Silver Spring, not at the county seat in Rockville. The office has a complex schedule with walk-in and appointment-only hours split across different days, so reading this guide before you go can save you a wasted trip.
Montgomery County Overview
Montgomery County Vital Records Office Location and Hours
The Montgomery County vital records office is at the Dennis Avenue Health Center, located at 2000 Dennis Avenue, Suite 27, Silver Spring, MD 20902. This is not in Rockville, where the county seat and many government offices are. If you drive to Rockville looking for death records, you will be in the wrong place. The Silver Spring location handles both death and birth certificate requests for Montgomery County residents.
The office schedule is more layered than most Maryland counties. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, walk-in service runs from 8:00 to 11:00 AM, first-come-first-served. Appointment-based service on those same days runs from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the office is appointment-only, with slots from 8:00 to 11:30 AM and again from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. The office closes for lunch every day from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. There are no walk-in slots on Tuesdays or Thursdays.
There is one more thing to plan for. Maryland Vital Records Administration is operating a new registration and payment system. Processing and wait times are running longer than usual during this transition. Same-day service is not guaranteed when the system is slow. If you need the certificate the same day, call ahead to ask about current conditions. Do not assume you can walk in and walk out quickly, especially on busy mornings.
Phone numbers: birth certificates at 240-773-1207, death certificates at 240-777-1757. Bilingual staff and forms in Spanish are available. When you arrive, check in at the lobby table before going to the vital records office. Skipping that check-in step can delay your service or result in being missed entirely.
Montgomery County Death Certificate Fees and Availability
Death certificates in Montgomery County are available for deaths that occurred on or after January 1, 2015. For deaths before that date, you must visit the Maryland State Archives instead. The fee as of September 2, 2025 is $18 for the first certified copy and $20 for each additional copy ordered in the same transaction. These fees were recently updated, so confirm the current amount when you call if you are reading this at a later date.
Payment is accepted in cash, by credit card, with Apple Pay, or by check or money order made payable to "Montgomery County, MD." The Apple Pay option is useful if you prefer not to carry cash. Confirm your payment method is accepted before you arrive, since not all offices accept every form of payment listed, and policies can change. Bring a backup payment method just in case.
Who Can Request a Montgomery County Death Certificate
Access to death certificates is restricted. Not everyone can walk in and request a copy. You must bring your ID and documents proving your relationship to the deceased. Maryland requires eligible requesters to show both their identity and their entitlement to the record before a certificate is issued.
Valid ID must be a government-issued photo ID showing both an issue date and an expiration date. A driver's license, U.S. passport, MVA photo ID, or military ID all qualify. For death certificates specifically, you also need entitlement documents. These might include a marriage certificate, a birth certificate showing you are a child or parent of the deceased, or an obituary that names you as a surviving relative. Bring more than one type of entitlement document if you have them. Staff review these before issuing the certificate.
Forms for death and birth certificate requests are available in both English and Spanish at the office. You can also download the Maryland Death Record form before your visit to save time at the counter. The office processes requests on the spot, but with the new system in place, same-day turnaround may not always be possible when things are running slow.
Deaths Before 2015: Maryland State Archives
If the death you are researching occurred before January 2015, the Montgomery County vital records office cannot help you. Those records are held at the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis. The Archives is at 350 Rowe Boulevard, Annapolis, MD 21401, and can be reached at 410-260-6400. A certified copy by mail costs $25. Uncertified in-person copies are $1.00 each.
The Archives maintains a Death Certificate Index for 1973 to 2014, which covers a large portion of the records gap between the county's current availability and older historical filings. For records even further back, or for cases where a certificate is difficult to locate, the Archives offers a guide for finding missing or hard-to-locate death records. Montgomery County's large and diverse population means some older records may have been filed under variant spellings or in adjacent jurisdictions, making this guide especially useful.
