Severn Overview
Severn Death Records: Where to Start
Severn is an unincorporated community in Anne Arundel County. It does not have its own city or town government. All vital records functions, including death certificates, run through Anne Arundel County. The county health department office is in Annapolis, roughly 18 miles from Severn.
The Anne Arundel County Department of Health is at the Health Services Building, 3 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Annapolis, MD 21401. The main phone number for vital records appointments is 410-222-4462. This office can issue death certificates for deaths that took place in Maryland from 2015 onward.
For deaths before 2015, you need the Maryland Division of Vital Records. DVR holds records from 1969 to the present across all Maryland counties. For deaths before 1969, the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis is the right source. Knowing the year of death upfront will save you time when you contact the right office.
Appointment-Only Service at Anne Arundel County
The county health department operates on an appointment-only basis. There are no walk-ins. This policy was put in place when the department moved to a new records registration system that can experience backlog and occasional outages. Walk-ins were creating long waits and confusion, so the department now asks everyone to call ahead and schedule.
Call 410-222-4462 to book your appointment. When you call, have ready the name of the deceased, the approximate date of death, and your relationship to the person. Staff may ask for this information to confirm the record exists before booking your slot. Appointment availability can vary, so do not wait until you urgently need the certificate to make the call.
The county noted that the new registration system can be offline at times. If you call and get an automated message about system downtime, try again the next business day. The department has been transparent about these issues and recommends patience while the system stabilizes.
What to Bring and How Much It Costs
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID that shows an issue date and an expiration date. A driver's license or passport fits this requirement. An ID without an expiration date will not be accepted.
You also need to show your connection to the deceased. Acceptable entitlement documents include a birth certificate that shows your relationship, a marriage certificate, or a published obituary. Bring originals or certified copies. Plain photocopies are less reliable and may be questioned. The office makes its own copies of your documents for the file.
The fee at the county office is $18 for the first copy and $20 for each additional copy. There is a 2.2% surcharge on credit and debit card payments. Cash and checks made payable to "Controller, Anne Arundel County" are accepted without a surcharge. Plan your payment method before arriving.
Military Families in Severn
Severn sits adjacent to Fort George G. Meade and the NSA campus. A large number of active-duty service members and their families live in the Severn area. Military families dealing with a death may have access to additional resources beyond the standard state vital records system.
Active-duty service members who die on federal property at Fort Meade may have records that involve both the Army and the state vital records system. The state death certificate is still issued through Maryland and Anne Arundel County, but the military may generate additional documentation through Army Casualty Affairs. For questions specific to military deaths, the installation's Casualty Assistance Officer can provide guidance on what records are created and where they are held.
Veterans who are already separated from service and living in Severn when they die have records processed the same way as any civilian death. The death certificate goes through Anne Arundel County and the state DVR. Survivors may also have access to veterans' benefits through the VA, which involves separate records and a separate application process.
Maryland Division of Vital Records: State-Level Access
The Maryland Division of Vital Records is located at 6764-B Reisterstown Road, Baltimore, MD 21215. The mailing address for requests is P.O. Box 68760, Baltimore, MD 21215-0036. Phone: 410-764-3038 or 1-800-832-3277.
DVR is the right place to order if you want to mail your request, if you need a record from before 2015, or if the county appointment system is not available when you need it. The state fee is $24 for the first copy and $12 per additional copy. Mail processing takes four to six weeks. In-person visits also require appointments.
Online orders go through VitalChek, which Maryland has authorized as its sole online vendor. VitalChek adds a service fee but provides a faster turnaround than mailing a check to the P.O. Box.

Older Severn Records: Maryland State Archives
The Maryland State Archives at 350 Rowe Boulevard, Annapolis, MD 21401, phone 410-260-6400, maintains death records predating the state DVR system. For Severn deaths before 1969, the Archives holds the relevant records.
The Archives offers an online death certificate index covering 1973 through 2014. This tool lets you verify a record exists before submitting a formal request, which can save time if the record you need was filed under a different spelling or location. If you cannot locate a record, the Archives also provides a resource page on finding hard-to-locate Maryland death records.
Anne Arundel County Probate and Estate Records
When a Severn resident dies and an estate needs to be settled, probate filings go to the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court and Register of Wills in Annapolis. Wills, inventories, and estate administration documents are public records once filed. You can access them at the courthouse or through the Maryland courts online case search system.
These records are separate from death certificates but often contain detailed information about family relationships, property, and the circumstances around a death. For genealogy research or estate administration, pulling both the death certificate and the probate file gives a more complete picture than either record alone.
